What are RSS & ATOM?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) and ATOM are XML-based format for distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news headlines). Using RSS or ATOM, web content providers can easily create and disseminate news headlines and URLs.

Typical applications for using RSS or ATOM feeds include using a program known as a News Aggregator (also called news reader) to collect, update and display RSS or ATOM feeds on another webpage. You simply plug in the addresses of the RSS or ATOM files you want, such as the ones listed below. By using RSS or ATOM feeds, website owners can keep websites 'fresh' and up to date.

Another way many people use RSS or ATOM feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or "blogs". Blogs are a publishing tool used for many purposes and consist of web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links.
